Mindfulness is not just some trend, but a proven method to help increase focus and awareness and make it possible to self-regulate and shift attention when caught up in negative thinking and worrying.
Mindfulness exercises are designed to train our awareness and the ability to stay calm under stress and turbulence as well as having better sleep and increasing resilience.
There are well-established links between positive mental health, social and emotional competence, and academic achievement.
In today’s education environment the demands on teachers and students is high and self-management is a priority.
This course provides practices and techniques to teach and guide others to develop mindfulness. It is based on the successful programme Mindful NZ Schools that has been running for five years.
The concept has developed out of the work of Jon Kabat-Zinn PhD, who is internationally known as a scientist, writer, and meditation teacher engaged in bringing mindfulness into the mainstream.
Studies in education have shown that teachers who participate in mindfulness training report that they have become more alert and attentive, less reactive, less judgemental, and more patient (Schoeberlein & Koffler, 2005).
Students express that it develops the ability to let go of unhelpful thoughts and feelings (Broderick & Metz, 2009).
The session is interactive and engages participants in recognising when and how to use and teach the techniques.
Written documentation, a Mindfulness workbook and lesson plan examples are also provided.
