Half Day Learning to Teach Mindfulness Workshop
15 April 2016

4 Hour Introduction to Teaching Mindfulness

As the benefits from Mindfulness are becoming more widely recognised and acknowledged, there is now a real opportunity for teachers and parents who see the value of providing students and children with attention training and simple exercises to help improve impulse control and focus both at home and in the classroom to be part of bringing Mindfulness to more students in New Zealand.

What will you learn?

In this half day workshop (4hrs) you will not only be introduced to the powerful Mindfulness techniques that are helping individuals from all walks of life to have more balance, harmony and focus in their lives, you will also get the tools and initial training in how to teach these techniques to students and children in a way that makes it interesting, non-intrusive, even fun and most important – accessible for children of all ages.

The Workshop Covers:

  • What is Mindfulness?
  • Why Teach Mindfulness in Schools
  • Evidence- based reseach and background
  • Mindfulness Exercises and Activities to assist internalising the process
  • Training Session – Teaching Mindfulness

Young children are usually more present than adults but as they grow older they lose touch with the immediacy of themselves and their environment. They are told to hurry up all the time and have an increasing number of demands to juggle. Children soon begin to lose touch with the present and start to live on the same auto-pilot as adults.

Studies have shown that emotional regulation, social behaviour and academic achievement have increased as much as 600% among students who have received Mindfulness instructions.

Benefits such as:

  • Decreased stress and anxiety
  • Better sleep
  • Better self-management
  • Less reactivity
  • Improved mental resilience
  • Increased self-awareness
  • Better memory
  • Increased attention and focus
  • Better conflict resolution skills

are common and expectable result from regular Mindfulness practice.

Learn & Practise IN A SAFE & Relaxed Setting

The Workshop is in two parts. Part one – the first two hours- will give you the background to what Mindfulness is and why it is gaining such recognition as a resource to improve students and children’s ability to deal with stress, pressure and anxiety. We will look at the well-documented benefits and especially the increased executive function in children who have done 8 week programmes and continue to practice Mindfulness on a regular basis. Rita, a registered teacher herself, will share of her own experience of running Mindfulness programmes in several Auckland schools.

Part two – the second half of the workshop is more practical; we will do different types of guided mindfulness exercises and training in delivering Mindfulness lessons to students and children.
An important section will be about how you can establish your own mindfulness practise at home. – No one can teach Mindfulness better than the person who is practising it.

WHY IT MATTERS

One of the biggest causes of dropping out of school is behavioural problems; not having the skill or being taught how to manage emotions. Being left without any guidance towards inner self control and resilience is dangerous and the problem often escalates when left unchecked leading to under-achieving, poverty etc.

This is real. The third biggest reason for death amongst teenagers is suicide. Depression, drug abuse, self-harming behaviours are all the result of not being able to manage emotions.

It has been widely forecast that depression will affect 20% of the population by 2020. We know people, including children and students are suffering. At the same time we know that Mindfulness works and could help many of those students if it was made available as part of the curriculum .

Research constantly reports how Mindfulness leads to improved self-management and impulse control.

Why are we not offering Mindfulness training in schools already?Rita Riccola
Mindfulness practices are exercises designed to make us become more Mindful human beings; ones who can focus, pay attention in the midst of distraction, have empathy with others and oneself, ones who fully feel emotions without reacting – learning to reflect and respond.

Mindfulness should be available to everyone, everywhere- to alleviate personal suffering and promote self-regulation and develop compassion and empathy for others. Mindfulness has been proven to enrich lives and to help children make sense of their emotions. We need to teach Mindfulness to children and students.

If you feel inspired to make Mindfulness available to more children and students in New Zealand this workshop is for you

“Practicing Mindfulness has been shown to alter the structure and function of the brain, which is what allows us to learn, acquire new abilities, and improve memory.”

DR. ROMIE MUSHTAQ

Mindfulness trains the mind to be observant and responsive to the many challenges we face every day.

Harvard, Oxford and Stanford Universities offer Mindfulness courses. Mindfulness is not just a trend but a proven method for success.

Relieve Anxiety & Stress

In our fast paced lives, where we rush from one demand to another, there is very little time or space to stop and pause. Mindfulness offer the tools needed to connect with our inner intelligence, where we can access natural calmness beneath the busy minds.

Let go of Anger & Frustration

Coming in contact with your direct experience in the mindful state allows us to become familiar with the patterns that direct our lives; our thoughts, emotions and reactions.

OVERCOME WORRYING
& NEGATIVE THINKING

Pain is an inevitable part of being human but suffering is optional. In Mindfulness we learn how to manage our thoughts and emotions instead of letting emotions and thoughts manage us.

STOP INNER CHATTER

Aimless thinking and inner chatter is draining our energy and clouding over the present moment. One of the most common benefits from regular Mindfulness training is greater mental clarity and a new sense of inner peace.

Have Better Sleep

To be able stop incessant thinking and worrying is one of the great benefits of Mindfulness and it makes it easier to sleep in and have unbroken sleep throughout the night.

STOP LIVING IN THE PAST

Mindfulness practices increasingly bring you more into the present with the growing awareness that going over the past keeps you stuck in the past.

Frequently Asked Questions

Mindfulness means “paying attention in a particular way; on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgementally.” – Jon Kabat-Zinn. (Founder of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction)

Mindfulness is a way of noticing where your attention is in the present moment without judging it good or bad. It’s about not wandering off into an imagined future or going over the past but fully engaging right here right now.

The ability to focus on one thing at a time is a skill and requires practice. Just as athletes train on a daily basis to maintain fitness and stamina, Mindfulness, which is a mental training, requires regular daily practice to experience the many well documented benefits especially of de-stressing, relaxing the body and generally self-managing in a new and empowering way.

Through guided, simple easy-to-do practisies you are training the mind to be more present in the moment. resulting in it to be less anxious, more alert and alive.

Everyone really and especially anyone

  • Who over-thinks
  • Thinks anxiously as a regular behavior.
  • Stressed people
  • People who engage in constant negative self-talk
  • People who can’t sleep because of incessant inner chatter
  • People who operate on ‘auto-pilot’ and are always ‘on’..
Current research tells us 20 minutes a day is required to achieve lasting benefits. This can be broken into two 10 minutes sessions-easily do-able when you experience the inner calm and rest from the robotic mind.
You will slowly (sometimes quickly) begin to experience a lightness of being, less anxiety, better sleep, easier communications and a general improved sense of well-being and have more energy. These are not empty promises but almost guaranteed if you follow the instructions, do the practices regularly and begin to live more Mindfully.
Meditation and Mindfulness are very similar the only difference being that Meditation takes many more forms;chanting, mantras as well as breathing and visualisations however Mindfulness meditation is a specific set of exercises that focus exclusively on the five senses.
Many places that run Mindfulness courses do so on a donation basis and are connected to spiritual centers. Mindfulness in New Zealand is an independent group and the trainers pay to live just like everyone else. Everybody needs to be paid for their effort as well as the cost of hiring venues and paying advertising to let people know the courses exist.

NON RELIGIOUS

There is no religion, dogma or beliefs attached to Mindfulness. Mindfulness has it’s roots in many contemplative practices but doesn’t require or impose on anyones belief systems. It’s a mental activity that has proven to be of great benefit for maintaining physical, mental and emotional balance.

Evidence Based

The many benefits of Mindfulness have been well documented especially in the past 30 years since Jon Kabat-Zinn established the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction programme that has led to the wide-spread, evidence based research and the acceptance of these non-religious, practical exercises anyone can do.

MINDFULNESS FOR EVERYONE

Mindfulness practice doesn’t require any preparation or beforehand knowledge about meditation. Anyone can experience the effect from these simple exercises.
